Greetings from Surprenant's Berry Farm!
A little history of the man who makes the jam by the Man!
I have a colorful history you might say. My Grandfather bought a farm here in Mooers, New York, in the early 1900's and my father inherited it. When I was nine months old he sold the farm and moved four miles away next to another farm and he became a truck driver. My mother made sure everyone could cook including the boys. We never made jam that I can recall. In the summer of 62 I went over to the farm next door with a couple friends and helped with loading hay on the wagon. From that day forward I worked on that farm till I was eighteen years old. I graduated from high school and went to college in Troy, NY, for a semester and then joined the Air Force in Jan of 1971. I married my high school sweetheart in July of 71 and we went on the have three sons. Once in the Air Force I became a weapons mechanic with a tour in Las Vegas, Nevada, in a test squadron. I next went to England in 1972 where I was involved in an auto accident with a lorry, which was to leave me lame the rest of my life. This was when I was to plant my first strawberry plants. I never got to harvest them due to the accident but it was the beginning of my involvement with fruit plants. In 1977 I was to have two ankle fusions as a result of the accident in England. I was then reassigned to Turkey as a weapons advisor, where I had another head on collision which left me hospitalized for a year after which I was to move on to accounting. I was re-assigned stateside to Plattsburgh AFB in 1979 and in 1981 my wife and I purchased her family farm. In 86 I started growing strawberries again but did not get the chance to harvest them either due to the new military orders. I was reassigned to Belgium -- Bye Bye States. I retired form the Air Force in 1991 as a disabled veteran. I became a Dog Control Officer for three local towns, one of them being Mooers, New York. I again planted strawberries, 33,000 this time, and started a strawberry u-pick in the summer of '92. In '94 I started to raise raspberry plants which we now continue to grow as our main crop. In the summer of 98 we finally started to make and sell our jams and jellies. We started with just a few different kinds and never thought it would grow to become over 150 different varieties. We do the regular high-sugar jams, along with low-sugar and sugar-free jams. We went from making 1,200 to over 25,000 jars a year in the past seven years. All made the old fashion way. NO STEAM KETTLES HERE. Our best sellers are the apple pie jams and the pepper jams. We currently service approximately 30 wholesale accounts and are always looking for more. To sum it all up:I went from the farm; to college; to the Air Force; to retirement and now I'm back on the farm making jam and lovin' every minute!
